Corporate Affairs Commission is a governmental body that gives you the legal right to practice and operate your business in Nigeria. To register with CAC, you don’t need a lawyer, you don’t need to visit their office, just go online to their website and proceed with your registration to get the E-Certificate.
To get started, visit https://www.cac.gov.ng/business-names/ and follow the steps below to help you register successfully.
- Search the business/company name you wish to register.
Searching your business name through their records helps to know if the name has been registered before. E.g. if the business name you wish to use is ‘’onyia construction’’ type it in and search. If it appears in their record, it means the name is already in use, if not, you are free to proceed to the next step.
2. Reserve your business name.
To do this, you need to create an account with CAC using your email address.
A link will be sent to your mail, use the link to access your profile and proceed with reserving your business name.
On your profile, you will be required to choose the Classification (business, company, etc.) and Business type (sole proprietorship, partnership, etc.) you wish to register
After that, verify if the details you gave are correct, if there is an error, please effect the changes before submitting.
Generate a Remita and pay for the name reservation online, which is about N500 excluding the Remita charges.
3. Register your name with CAC.
proceed to register your business/ company name after reserving it.
Here you are required to upload the following documents:
- Passport photograph
- Signature
- Identity card (which might be either an international passport, driver’s license, voters’ card, national ID card, etc.)
- Fill in your home/office address, nature, and type of business.
After that, generate a remita and pay the amount required for your type of business either Sole proprietorship which is N10,000, or Partnership which is N20,000, and submit, you are done with the registration.
your uploaded documents will be screened and approval will be sent to your mail after 3-4 days, click on the link sent to your mail to download your E-certificate. Congratulations you have successfully registered your business name.
